Dear members

May has been a deeply encouraging month for The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.  It has reaffirmed my conviction that the future of our profession depends on two equally important forces: inspiring the next generation and empowering engineers to turn innovation into real‑world impact. Through the advancement of EngSeeds and Enginpreneurs, we are doing both — planting seeds for tomorrow while accelerating solutions for today.

On 28 May 2026, we marked an important milestone with the EngSeeds Collaboration MoU Signing Ceremony at our Headquarters. I was delighted to witness the strong commitment from eight leading tertiary institutions — CityUHK, HKBU, HKMU, PolyU, HKUST, THEi, CUHK and HKU — alongside participating secondary schools. This partnership represents a powerful alliance across academia and the profession to nurture future engineering talent in a structured and meaningful way.

EngSeeds is more than an outreach initiative; it is a long‑term strategy to strengthen Hong Kong’s engineering talent pipeline. By engaging students at an early stage, introducing them to engineering thinking, and connecting them with mentors and real‑life challenges, we are nurturing curiosity, resilience, and problem‑solving capabilities. The pilot phase, commencing in June 2026, will provide valuable insights and experience to inform its broader roll‑out following the pilot run. Our aspiration is clear: to inspire young people to see engineering not merely as a career choice, but as a meaningful platform to serve society, contribute to national development, and create sustainable solutions for the future.

At the same time, we continue to empower practising engineers to lead innovation through Enginpreneurs. On 27 May 2026, we renewed our Memorandum of Understanding with Cyberport and celebrated the Enginpreneurs Showcase. Since its launch in 2023, the programme has supported engineer‑led teams in transforming ideas into impactful applications across smart infrastructure, artificial intelligence, digital technologies, and sustainability. It is inspiring to see how technical expertise, when combined with entrepreneurial vision, can generate solutions that address real needs.

Building on this momentum, we will also witness the Enginpreneurs Charter Signing Ceremony at Hong Kong Science Park, marking another important step in strengthening our innovation ecosystem. The Charter formalises a shared commitment among partners to foster engineer led entrepreneurship, deepen cross sector collaboration, and support the commercialisation of engineering innovation.  This milestone reflects HKIE’s determination to provide structured pathways for members who aspire to translate technical excellence into market impact.

Engineers possess a unique strength: we understand systems, we analyse risks, and we build with precision. Enginpreneurs extends that strength into the innovation ecosystem by connecting our members with mentors, investors, industry partners, and government stakeholders. Through collaboration, we are reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as a hub for technology‑driven entrepreneurship and demonstrating that engineers are not only builders of infrastructure, but architects of innovation.

These initiatives are especially meaningful as Hong Kong prepares to align more closely with national development priorities under the 15th Five‑Year Plan. The engineering profession has a vital role in translating policy vision into practical implementation. Whether through infrastructure development, technological advancement, sustainability strategies, or digital transformation, engineers contribute solutions grounded in evidence, professionalism, and long‑term thinking. HKIE remains committed to providing constructive professional input and supporting high‑quality development for both Hong Kong and the nation.

Internally, the successful launch of our Digitalisation Project in April has strengthened our ability to connect with members and support our expanding initiatives. A modernised digital platform enhances engagement, streamlines processes, and enables more effective collaboration across divisions and committees. This foundation is essential as we continue to broaden our impact.

As I reflect on this month’s progress, I am reminded that engineering is ultimately about people — nurturing potential, enabling innovation, and building trust through professionalism. EngSeeds plants the aspiration. Enginpreneurs empowers execution. Together, they form a continuum that strengthens our profession from classroom to marketplace.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to our academic partners, industry collaborators, mentors, volunteers, and members for your unwavering support. Your dedication ensures that HKIE remains forward‑looking, relevant, and impactful.
